Well I'll start off with a little bit
about myself. My name is Ken Wares Jr. and I'm an avid hunter I've
always been told it is better to say you have a problem then deny it!
I've always been out in the woods. As a child I spent countless hours in
the woods finding various animals. Of course my father took me out
hunting and I was hooked. I can remember my first harvest. We were
squirrel hunting behind my grandparent's house, and with my first gun a
single shot 410 I took my first squirrel. That was the thrill of a
lifetime to me. Dad and I spent many hours in the woods and he taught me
a lot about all sorts of hunting. From squirrel hunting, we starting
upland bird hunting. I really enjoyed that since we would walk through
the woods finding game instead of sitting still waiting for game. I
think it took me about 3 years of hunting grouse and woodcock before I
actually hit one. Dad would tell me "the cheapest part of the trip is
the shells and you'll never hit anything if you don't shoot." I took
those words to heart and now I shoot, and shoot a lot! Dad and I still
spend a lot of time together hunting, well when he is in town. He has
started to travel a lot for work and now that I have a family of my own
the time we spend together is getting less and less but I still enjoy
that father/son time.
I've hunted all sorts of small game
and deer here in Michigan. I've also been able to pheasant hunt in North
Dakota, hog hunt in Georgia, waterfowl hunt in Arkansas.
Now that I have a son of my own
(Devin) I hope to pass on this great hobby to him. Devin who is now 11
has passed his hunters safety class and has been on a few hunts. Just
this year I have been able to watch my little boy grow up before my
eyes. He's taken geese and was able to take his first duck ever this
season. Which I am sure there will be many more to come. Devin and I
spend the winter days out chasing rabbits and squirrels at a friend's
house. I don't even take a gun along I just enjoy seeing him out in the
field and he gets so happy when he gets a shot! I just hope that I can
also share these memories with my little daughter Tori, she is only 1 so
I have some time to wait. But I really hope the day will come where
Devin, Tori and I can all head out together!
My personal favorite type of hunting
is waterfowl. I've only been waterfowl hunting for a few years now. I
went once and was hooked. Now I look forward to opening day and spending
the waterfowl season out with friends and family to share in this
wonderful type of hunting. Luckily I have a very understanding wife
(Felicia) who doesn't complain too much about me being gone hunting so
much.
Being an avid waterfowler I belong to
Delta Waterfowl and I'm also on the committee for the local Ducks
Unlimited chapter. I enjoy lending a hand and meeting people who share
the same passion for waterfowl as I do! My passion has spilled over to
my personal life, our house has been taken over by various duck decoys
and mounts. My goal is to have one of every species of North American
waterfowl mounted that I've taken. Which will be pretty tough to do but
I have some trips planned to hunt sea ducks on the east and west coast
to fill that dream. Did I mention it's a good thing that Felicia doesn't
mind the ducks in the house? That is me in a nutshell...
